CONCEPT DESIGN
Shaner & Co.

A contemporary home for a family of four, hidden in the forrest of the Santa Monica mountains, with easy access to the trail networks for hiking, running, and biking.

The family has a particular taste for Japanese and Scandinavian architecture and design, and so the brief targeted a refined and distilled material palette, with simple shapes and spaces.

The home opens up to the surroundings to allow light and air to pass through public and private spaces as if they were resting spots in nature, rather than interior rooms distinct from their environment.

An in-situ concrete foundation anchors the home to the hillside, japanese style stones and soils curate the arrival and cirulation around the site, treated oak clads the exterior and matches the forrest, and an oxidized iron standing seam metal roof provides a robust protective layer for a forever-home.
